A field guide to Quinta Avenida, by the people who work on it

A field guide to Quinta Avenida, by the people who work on it

Quinta Avenida runs a little over three kilometres, north to south, one block from the water. The tourists you see on it in the afternoon are on the fifth or sixth version of the street; the one we work on, between Calle 38 and Calle 40, is quieter than the postcard.

Start north. The stretch above Calle 38 is where the shopkeepers live. The coffee is better, the tacos are cheaper, and nobody is trying to sell you a boat tour. Walk south and the volume rises about one decibel per block until you hit the cruise crowd around 10.

If it's your first day, do this: an espresso at Choux Choux, a walk down to the water at Calle 26, then loop back to us for whatever you forgot to pack. That's it. Don't over-plan Quinta. The street rewards the loop.

"Quinta is not a strip. It's a river. Read the current."
