The subterranean workshops keeping Oaxacan glass alive

A day inside a family-run vidriería in the Central Valleys.

The workshop is half underground because the heat has to go somewhere. In August the ceiling is close to sixty degrees. Miguel, who's been blowing glass here for thirty-one years, wears a t-shirt.

Everything they make is from recycled bottles. Corona greens, Victoria browns, and the occasional blue from an old Bonafont jug. The colours you see in our shop start as trash on a curb.
